The relationship between a person's state of mind and their eating habits is actually more closely-linked than most people realize.

Eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia are commonly associated with psychology, and over-eating can also be included in that category.

I would recommend trying to tackle the reason behind your nervousness, as you'll find that this will have a direct impact on your urge to over-eat.

Having said that, there are also steps you can take as far as diet is concerned.

Nervous over-eater?

The most effective way to tackle the problem you've described would be to look at the root cause of your nervousness.

Speaking to someone you trust and getting their perspective might be one really good way to address your issues or, alternatively you may want to seek advice from a professional.

Controlling your eating when nervous

There are a number of really effective things you can do to control your nervous eating habit. Here are my suggestions:

  • Drink a glass of water- Water will take up space in your stomach, space that would otherwise be occupied by food. Every time you start feeling nervous, follow it up with a nice large glass of water.
  • Plan ahead and stock up- Snacking on healthier food will obviously help the situation. Why not pre-empt your nervous eating and stock your fridge with carrot, celery sticks, and cucumber? This might not help tackle the original problem, but it will ensure that the repercussions on your health are thwarted.

This problem affects many people. If you have only had it for a short time, it may improve by itself; but if you've felt like this for a longer time, and especially if it seems to be getting worse, you should get professional help.

You have identified the problem, which is good; now you may need help in identifying the root causes of your nervousness, and your relationship with food.

There are a lot of websites dedicated to eating disorders.

If you eat when you're nervous, you need to keep yourself busy.  Make sure you're never sitting around with nothing to do, always have work to do or a hobby to engage in.

If you're ever feeling nervous, take that as a queue to go and do something.

Another thing you could do is use that as a queue to chew on some gum, or to go get and drink a glass of water.

A lot of the times you end up stuffing your face with food when you have just nothing better to do with your time or when you're bored...

The most important thing is that you've at least RECOGNIZED you are doing this consciously.

That means, from here on in, if you do it, it is a CHOICE...not an unconscious habit you can't control.

Understand that fact that you are in control of what you do from here on out, take responsibility, and set up new habits, new automatic patterned responses so every time you feel like this again, you automatically do something to distract yourself.

If you need any more help in setting things up properly, simply educate yourself more on how to setup a proper diet/exercise plan and find the motivation within you to stick to it.

You can find more info on how to set one up here.
