A premature birth is said to occur when a baby is born before 37 weeks of growth is achieved in the womb of the mother. A normal pregnancy lasts nine months and between 38 to 42 weeks. When a newborn has had less than 37 weeks growth in the uterus, there is danger to the health of the baby if not well cared for after the birth.
There are a large number of reasons causing premature birth. Premature delivery earlier increases the risk of its repetition. Multiple gestation pregnancy is another reason and the risk increases with each additional foetus.
Placental previa, placental abruptions, pre-eclampsia and fibrosis also cause premature birth. The level of amniotic fluid also affects the period of pregnancy with too much and too little leading to premature birth. Infections during pregnancy affecting uterus or placenta might also cause premature birth.
Chronic diseases of the mother including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and kidney problems will also result in premature birth. The unhealthy habits of drinking, smoking and the like would also increase the risk of premature birth.
