You can, but it can be extremely painful, it can become infected further and yes it can make you sick if you swallow any of the pus and infectious material. If you do, I suggest rinsing your mouth with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, just don't swallow any of it.

The tooth abscess can be due to bacterial infection. If you purchase an antibiotic then use it for 5 days. There are many NGOs and organizations which can help you in the dental and general medical health care. I am giving you a link which might be helpful to get free or low charges of dental treatment. Visit Help with costs.

Rinse with peroxide, I was unable to get into the dentist right away, so called them. They said rinse with peroxide for a few minutes and follow with a warm water rinse after. Do this a few times a day. As an added benefit, it whitened my teeth.
Hope this helps

Yes, you can definitely pierce the abscess and should do so if you are unable to seek immediate medical attention.  DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH ALCOHOL!  You will never forget the pain if you do...rinse with Hydrogen peroxide.  If you decide to pierce it, make sure you use a sterilized very sharp needle, find the point at which is seems to be developing a "head" and work slowly.  Mine was very swollen and it didn't take very much probing.  It is disgusting and really hurt when I pressed the pus out.  Much better today, but I would recommend placing gauze over the opening after you have cleansed your mouth.

You can also go to like a university or a college.. And its like 10 dollar a tooth a lot of times to get fixed.. Without insurance.. But the peroxide is a good idea..

I pop mine all the time, finally have enough money to go get it taken care of, but according to my dentist you need to keep the pus flowing at all times, because if you let it back up it can cause major major problems
