I am in the same boat as the person who's had theirs for 12 years, and everyone else, though you mean well - you just have no idea what you're talking about, there is NO assistance what so ever for dental AT ALL.  Even county hospitals in California used to provide emergency extractions for free, as of 2006 they do not, because they do not have to, because insurance providers have lobbied their way into coopting ALL dental care as 'COSMETIC'.  There are no free dentists, there are no low or no income programs for dental care, and there are no college programs.  A dental college or University cannot have students operating on patients unlicensed and uncertified, they have plain old regular doctor's working there, and they charge, the same as any dental office, and in many cases MORE (like you.C. Davis which it costs $3,890 for ONE root canal to have performed there).
So I hate to break it to you, but there is no help and no relief for us sufferers without health insurance.  Have a good day, I will have a painful one.

I have had a abscess tooth for over 12 years now. I work but don't make enough money. I had always excepted I would eventually die from this. Every day has been a new problem illness or symptom. Pain is bad but after 12 years you become dull to it. Sugar hurts really bad much worse now than hot and cold water. My immune system is shot and I get sick often. Body aches, swelling, fever you name it I have had it. I am still alive and came online to find out when I will finally die...The dentist never told me any way I could have this tooth removed without paying him a steep amount I will never afford.
