Usually problems with the ring finger, such as the one you are describing, is usually diagnosed as an Ulna nerve problem.

I have the same. But it has been going on for a couple of hours now. I did carry some heavy bags today which might be the cause as my finger did go purple! But its numb right now. Should I go to the doctor?

A pinch nerve of your spine controlling your fingers can cause this problem. Visit to neurophysician about your problem and go for CT or MRI scan. If you are having pain in the hands, then it can be arthritis. Check your blood sugar levels.
