My daughter's fingernails did this too. She is 13 now and her nails are fine. The pediatrician told me it was some kind of vitamin def.

What you need to do is take her to your family doctor asap and ask them. My daughter bit me on my finger and next thing I know my nail was falling off but I went to the doctor to make sure and he said that it got infected even though there was no puncture wounds. He told me that it will grow back and be back to normal in a few months and it was.
But if this is reoccuring with your daughter then you need to get her looked at asap to make sure that it is not serious. Good luck to you both.
