Nail waves occur from damage to the matrix of the nail (the part you cannot see, where your nail forms and pushes out onto your nail bed) This could have happened when you perhaps slammed your finger in a door, or in my case from years of pressure from writing in school. Obviously there are many, many ways the damage can happen. Sometimes it's a matter of your nail matrix/bed being an odd shape, or having had an bad infection that affected it. It is almost always damage to the matrix that we often don't remember even happening.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much that can be done for this other than filing your nails in such a way that is both flattering and sturdy. Wearing nail polish constantly as they grow will help prevent the nail splitting or cracking and it may help give it a better curve, but ultimately it won't fix the damage.
