Ouch – that can be really painful! Everybody does it at least once in their life, and although it can be really unpleasant, the pain will usually go away by itself if you just rest it.

Time seems to be the best healer when it comes to injuries like this, but sitting around in bed all day can be really frustrating, especially if you have things to do.

If you’re in too much pain to walk, call your doctor and ask for advice. You may even need to take time off work until you’re in better shape.

To ease the pain until your back and tailbone have stopped hurting, you could try the following:

  • Taking a hot bath
  • Sleeping
  • Taking anti-inflammatory painkillers
  • Putting ice on the affected area
  • Not sitting down for too long
If the pain seems to be getting worse rather than better, you’ll definitely want to contact your doctor - you might have done some damage when you fell.

Take it easy, apply ice for first 24 hours and then heat after that (or a combination of ice, heat, ice for 5 minutes at a time, ending with ice).  Hope it helps.
