Phenylephrine is used to relieve nasal discomfort caused by colds, allergies and hay fever. It is also used to relieve sinus congestion and pressure.
Phenylephrine will relieve symptoms but it cannot treat the cause of symptoms or speed recovery. It works by reducing swelling of the blood vessels in the nasal passages.Phenylephrine comes as a tablet, a liquid, or a dissolving strip taken orally.
An adult should take a 10 Mg dose every four hours, although reading the label is always strongly recommended. Medicines containing Phenylephrine are also available in extended release forms that are usually taken one or two times a day. It should not be taken more often than prescribed by your doctor or directed on the label.
Phenylephrine, when taken alongside other medications may cause problems so you should check carefully before using two or more products at the same time. This is especially important if you are giving cough and cold medications to a child, as if any of these medicines contain the same active ingredients they could lead to over dosing.
Nonprescription cough and cold combination products, including those that contain phenylephrine, can cause serious side effects or death in young children. Do not allow children younger than 4 years of age to use these products.
If you do give these products to anyone 4 to 11 years of age, check that they are clearly for children of that age.
