Propofol is a hypnotic agent which is used as a general anesthetic in surgery. Normally it is only use to sedate mechanically-ventilated adults. This drug is also widely used in veterinary surgery.

How long does propofol stay in your system?
Propofol should be out of your bloodstream within forty-eight hours after you were last given a dose, but it may still be detectable in the saliva, urine or hair follicles for a while longer. The time it takes to leave your body is reliant on a number of factors:

  • The amount of Propofol that was taken will determine how long it stays in your system. However, even high dosages (for long operations) will have left the blood by forty-eight hours after it was administered.
  • Your body's rate of metabolism wil also have an effect on how long it takes your body to dispose of the drug.
  • Your age may also have an impact on your body's ability to get rid of the drug. Older people's bodies may take a slighter longer time to dispose of Propofol.

Although generally Propofol should be out of the bloodstream within forty-eight hours, it may take longer for some people.
