If you are thinking about losing weight there are many different diets that you can go on, but it is probably better to talk to a medical professional to find out which is the best for you so that you remain healthy and do not get caught up in one of the many fad diets that are around.

If on the other hand, you simply want to tone up your tummy muscles so that it is more toned, then you will need to do specific exercises that concentrate on the right muscles.

Here are a couple of exercises that have been designed to focus on the abdominal muscles.

  • The bicycle

To do this lie down flat on the floor and push your lower back downwards.  Position both of your hands behind your head and lace your fingers together.

The next thing to do is to bring your knees up to your chest and rotate your legs at a 45 degree angle, much as you would if you were pedalling a bicycle.

While you are doing this, touch your right knee with your left elbow and your left knee with your right elbow in turn.

Make sure that you are raising yourself to do this with your stomach muscles and not with your back, otherwise you could hurt your back and the exercise will do little to help your abdomen.

  • Hindu pushups

To do this exercise, get on your hands and knees with your legs spread very wide apart and your rear pushed up.

Bend your elbows as if you were going to perform regular pushups and bring your down into an arc. Then you need to straighten your arms so that your back is pushed into an arc, upwards so that your hips are just above the ground.

The only way to cut the fat off of your tummy is to stay in a caloric deficit over time and wait until your body decides its time to start taking the fat off of your tummy.

You cannot spot reduce, it will come off of your tummy when your body decides to take it off there.

Aside from that, just eat a low calorie diet (no lower than 1,200 calories/day) and do cardio.

1 hour of cardio will burn about 500 calories for you, which in a week's time, doing cardio each day will burn off 1 extra pound.
