Hello, I am an identical twin as well.  My twin sister does not have children and is planning to get pregnant with her husband in August.  I on the other hand have a son, 7 months old.  I was just relieved that when I heard I was pregnant that the doctor did not see two heads in there, it was just one.  So, I looked into this topic further and I do not know how accurate this information is, but I learned that if you are a fraternal twin, the likely hood of you having twins is greater.  Fraternal twins is genetic because when you ovulate, you release two eggs instead of one every month.  However, identical twins is a fluk of nature because one egg is fertalized and then it splits into two, which is not genetic, it randomly happens.

Are you an identical twin or fraternal?

Tskor, As is usual scientists have now changed this belief/fact. They are now saying that identical twins do run in families too. But your answer was spot on for what was believed. It may be that the tendency for the splitting of the early embryo into two is inherited too as well as the release of more than one ovum. I have a female friend who is an identical twin. Her fathers brother also had a set of identical girl twins. So two brothers both had a set of female identicals. Cheers.

Current thinking is that both fraternal and identical twins are an hereditary trend, so while I couldn't give you an exact figure, you are certainly more likely to have twins.

Twins are only hereditary among fraternal twins. This means, if you are identical, you are not more likely to have twins yourself.

Guest, You were right. This WAS supposed but it is not any longer. It is now believed that both types of twins can and do run in families. Cheers. !But two egg twins are more common than one egg.
