An ovary is  a female sex gland, where many immature eggs are stored ( we are born with these stored)which at the menses  normally ripen, one by one, each month and are released into the oviduct.  This ripening and release of ova stops at the menopause.

An ovary is one of the pair of reproductive organs found in vetebrate females. Ovaries in females are the same as testes in males. They are gonads, that is the glands producing sex hormones and at the same time they fall into the category of endocrine glands, since they secrete hormones directly into the blood stream. Ovaries are oval shaped and lie in the 'ovarian fossa' that is right above the female reproductive parts, in the abdomen. They are approximately 1.5 inch each and are connected to the Fallopian tubes, into which each ovary in turn releases eggs every month. In case one of the ovaries is dysfunctional, the other takes over and provides eggs in its place.
