I was always taught that you should brush your teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes, and ALWAYS with an up and down motion, not side-to-side, in order to remove debris from between the teeth.

Same thing on your uppers but use a downward stroke. You should also brush your teeth at least 2x a day. And if you can't brush after meals you should drink water or chew a piece of gum to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Also make sure you are flossing at least once a day. I know this because I have 4 people in my family that are in the dental profession. Have fun!

You need to brush all areas carefully. You do not need to brush hard, just thoroughly. Your dentist can discuss technique with you. Many do not know how to brush properly, and until a few years ago, it seemed dentist's didn't either.
One minute on the bottom row, one minute on the top. I do it a little more than that though since I have braces. :P
