There are many reasons why a woman might have irregular vaginal bleeding after a total hysterectomy. Most of these reasons have nothing to do with the operation. Many of them can be considered serious, and should be checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

One reason for this to happen might be a bladder infection. While not critical in it, untreated it could become very serious.

Some forms of cancer will also cause this bleeding and need to be dealt with at once. This can make the difference in your life.

Tumors, polyps, and fibroids can also cause this bleeding, and can be easily removed, often in the doctor's office.

No matter what the reason is for the bleeding it is important to get medical attention right away. During a total hysterectomy both the uterus and cervix are removed, and this bleeding is a sure sign that a vaginal condition needs immediate attention.

I am experiencing exactly the same.  I saw my surgeon last week and he told me it was a large granular polyp. I am going back on friday to have this removed and the area cauterised. I hope this helps.  You need to go back to your surgeon or see your gp and they will give you an examination and advise you from there.  Good luck.

I had a hysterectomy at age 47 and am now 53. I have had bleeding recently with some clots. My hysterectomy was total. ....No ovaries, etc.
It is painful, but not like a period was. What possibly be the cause since I have nothing there?

In my case, pink spotting 2 years after surgery turned out to be from "granular tissue" in the vaginal cuff, treated by swabbing with silver nitrate. (I was told I wouldn't feel that, but in fact, it burned like Haydes.) I also had a Pap smear (normal). Now a few months later, it's started again... We'll see.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy 5 weeks ago. The doctor said the stitches were still there but I am having a unpleasant odor. Will this go away or do I need to see my doctor is there an infection?

A hysterectomy refers to the process through which the uterus is removed, either totally or partially. Since you have not mentioned which Hysterectomy you went through, it would be difficult to tell the exact problem. However, it is not normal to spot after a hysterectomy. And since you are spotting, I believe you had the partial Hysterectomy. I would suggest you to go to a gynecologist as soon as possible, as there can be many dangers associated with this spotting.
