Women who undergo a vaginal hysterectomy usually spend about one to three days in hospital before they are discharged.

The surgical procedure of a vaginal hysterectomy consists of removing the uterus through the vagina. It is usually quite easy to recover once the procedure has been performed, compared to an abdominal operation. As mentioned above, a woman will usually be discharged from hospital after to one and three days, however it will take a few weeks for a woman to completely recover from the surgery.

Once you have been discharged from hospital, you will be advised by your doctor to rest as much as possible and keep strenuous work to a minimum. Therefore, refrain from doing too many household chores and activities so you allow yourself time to heal. Keep in mind that after your surgery you will be likely to experience some pain; however in most cases your doctor will prescribe you with medication to relieve discomfort. In addition, do not be alarmed if you experience some vaginal bleeding because it is a normal occurrence that happens after this surgical procedure. The length of time that you experience bleeding will differ between each women, but it can last as long as six weeks in some cases.

Although very rare, as with all surgical procedures there’s always a chance of complications during recovery. Therefore if you experience any symptoms then you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms could include a fever, flu, shortness of breath and trouble going to the bathroom. In addition, if you experience heavier bleeding during your menstrual period than you usually do then seek medical help and guidance from your doctor.
