How Do You Get Hiccups?

Hiccups occur when the diaphragm which divides the chest from the abdomen effectively goes into spasm and this interrupts the normal pattern of breathing.  Sometimes this can be caused by eating too quickly and trapping air, by laughing too much or a drink, particularly a hot drink which is gulped down and again, air is trapped in the diaphragm.  Or if too much alcohol has been consumed hiccups may result.    There are a number of remedies for hiccups, such as drinking from the 'wrong side' of a cup i.e. The opposite side to the one facing you, holding your breath or even having a fright.  The thinking behind these are that the mind is distracted by the task in hand (or the fright) and breathing will then return to normal.  However, the best remedy for hiccups is actually to breathe in carbon dioxide.  The body naturally breathes out carbon dioxide with each exhalation of breath.  To breathe this in, cup hands over mouth and nose and breathe in and out several times.  This can also be achieved by using a paper bag but not a plastic bag, since this could cause suffocation.

You can also drink water (slowly) to get rid of hiccups. Breathing in and out slowly is also a way. Don't hold your breath in. You can if you want to, though because breathing in and out sometimes gets frustrating because it doesn't work right away. And sometimes you don't always have water around you to drink. But holding your breath in isn't good for you. Some people don't know when to stop and if you don't know when to stop your heart can stop working. My advice is to drink water slowly or breath in and out so it can release the air trapped in your diaphragm.

You get hiccups from this dome shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest when you inhale it pulls down to help pull your air into your lungs but also what can happen is the diaphragm it can become irritated when this happens it will pull down in jerky way then makes you suck air into your throat which causes air to rush which hits your voice box which causes hiccups

Hiccups can be extremely annoying for the person who has them. When we hiccup, the diaphragm involuntarily contracts. Due to this, it causes an immediate and brief closure to the vocal cords, which will often produce the sound that a hiccup makes. It is hard to pinpoint what the cause of most instances of hiccups actually is.

Hiccups are associated with eating or drinking too fast, being nervous or being over excited. For very rare cases, hiccups can be associated with pneumonia, pleurisy and certain disorders of the stomach. If you have any of these conditions, it may irritate the diaphragm and that will cause the hiccups.

People suggest many things to try and stop hiccups including:-

Holding your breath
Swallowing several sips of water
Drinking fruit juice
Putting sugar under your tongue
Getting someone to frighten you
Some things work on some people and not others, so it is always best to try everything until you find something which works for you.

I usually get them from laughing too much, or drinking or eating too fast, your diaphragm probably can't handle it so thats its way of fixing the problem.
