Sadly, yes. Makabuhay plants have been shown to cause some signs of miscarriage in pregnant women. Although some research has been carried out to determine whether the plant is linked to miscarriage, it is still not yet known why it can contribute to pregnant women losing their unborn child.

Some people claim it can induce a type of muscular spasm in the areas close to the womb which can contract the placenta and lead to the woman miscarrying. It should be noted though that this and other similar theories have not yet been proven by scientific or medical experts.

According to information published by the American College of Nurse Midwives, there are some herbs and plants that have been shown to aggravate the placenta during pregnancy and this can lead to miscarriage or contribute towards it. These include:
  • Tansy
  • Wormwood
  • Feverfew
  • Barberry
  • Mugwort
  • Rue
  • Shepherd's Purse
It should be noted though that when prescribed by an experienced practitioner, these herbs can be used safely during pregnancy.

If you are at all worried about your pregnancy and what herbs you should be avoiding or having small quantities of speak to your doctor as soon as possible. They will be able to put your mind at rest and apply their expert knowledge to your personal circumstances.
