Heavy bleeding are caused by un usual thickening of uterus lining.  If left untreated, it could one day lead to cancer.
You can take Primolut (norethisterone) 5mg x 2 tablets per day for about first 14 days of each month and later you can have your period and nature take care you.
This is the way to regulate the period and also to offset the thickening effects in the uterus lining tissues.
Better get examined internally with ultrasound is better option as there are many other problem than uterus wall thickening in women.  Sometimes cysts in the uterus makes unexpected heavy bleeding.

I'm 26 and I have the same exact problem...For the past few months my
periods have been very unexpected and lasting anywhere from 2-3 weeks
or having my period a few times a month. I would have my period and be
on it for about 3 weeks, stop for a week and start back up again for
another 3 weeks. It's completely insane and makes me worry =(

Anyways, made an appointment to see my doctor and tell him what has
been going on and he gave me a chart for me to keep track of my
period. On the chart I have to mark the day I started and I would have
to use different symbols for the flow...such as an X for heavy an O for
spotting and so on. So I would recommend starting a chart like that so
you can bring it to your doctor to give him/her a better idea on how
your period has been acting.

My doctor wants me to keep track of my period for a month and go back
and see him to let him know how everything has been going. He had
mentioned to me that what they might have to do is completely stop my
period and restart it again, but that if he believes it's something
more serious he might have to refer me to a women's clinic. He also
had said that it could possibly be a cyst on my ovary. Bottom line is,
is that you need to make an appointment with your doctor so he/she can
monitor your periods to try and figure out what is going on with your
body because having your period last for a month at a time is not
normal...believe me I know =(
