Oh my goodness you will def know when you have a dry socket, instead of progress on healing it's quite the opposite, it seems to feel worse each day and by about the 3rd or 4th day I was in tears, couldn't sleep, and lortab 5 and tylenol were barely touching the pain, it was over the weekend unfortunately I had to wait until after weekend to call my dentist, he had me come in and looked at it and put this piece of foam looking thing down in the socket after he rinsed it out with the waterpik, he soaked the foam in clove oil I believe and stuck it down in there good, it was a little uncomfortable while he was doing it, but then it started to feel a lot better, he wrote me a prescription for some more pain med and some penicillin, and told me to come back next day for more packing. I hope the best for you if you have a dry socket, I feel for you! Good luck & DON"T hesitate to call your dentist! They shouldn't charge you to go back and have that done, mine didn't charge me.

Usually a patient will know certainly if he suffers from dry socket following extraction of a tooth.  It is sharp, extreme pain. The term describes the condition where the blood clot following surgery has been dislodged, exposing the nerves and bone to the air.

It is normal that you will feel pain after tooth extraction, and sometimes on the second day it can be more acute, but soon it should be feeling better.  Follow your surgeon's instructions to rinse the site with a solution (some recommend salt water solutions, and some a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide).   Explain your concerns to your surgeon by giving the office a call and explaining any symptoms.  If you develop a fever, or foul odor from the site, see your dentist/surgeon immediately for remedial treatment.  Dry sockets are very uncommon, only occurring in about 5% of cases.

Yeah I have a dry socket right now. I   didn't realize that was the problem because people told me I would smell something rotten and would see grey stuff in the hole, which didnt happen to me. I got my wisdom teeth out on a monday and by friday the pain was much worse than when I got the teeth out. I waited it out over the weekend and then called my surgeon the next monday and told her that I was still in pain. They got me right in and told me that I did have a dry socket, they packed it with a foam thing that had medicine on it and I felt sooooo much better. If your pain isn't decreasing every day, do not hesitate to call them because it will only get worse.

I got a molar in the far back (not wisdom tooth). Pulled this past Tuesday (may 22) the pain has subsided just sore. But my top gum the side the tooth was pulled, feel aggitated. I am smoking w/o pulling on the cigarette. The site of where the tooth was is like a gray white-ish color with a tiny dark dot in the center. I think my gums are aggitated from rinsing with salt water. Is this normal?

I looked in my mouth and I see a layer of white goo over the hole. Does that mean that
the blood clot is gone or just covered up. If just covered up, what is the white stuff that I
can see? My tooth was pulled 18 hours ago.

A dried socket is when the gum does not close after a tooth extraction. The exposed area does not heal correctly. The pain can be excruciating! I would call the oral surgeon, sometimes they can put something over the  area (almost like a filling material) so that the nerve is not exposed.

Good luck and I hope it heals fast.

PAIN!  Like you've never had before!!!  You get dry socket when your blood plug has fallen out of the socket.  And I don't care what you take,  the bone is exposed and it hurts like hell!  To help it you need packing gauze and clove oil and your dentist will do this for you.  It hurts so bad because air is hitting your jaw bone. Get in to your doctor asap because it wont get better on its own.  Good Luck cb

I have dry socket. It is pain that seems like your head is being compressed and can hurt from your ear all the way down to your jaw line. My dentist put a pack in their which began to work immediately. However, I didnt think to ask my dentist...do I need to go back and get the pack removed. Also another sign of dry socket is a foul taste in your mouth. I am still getting that along with the fumes from the pack. So I think the pack relieves pain but does not do anything to treat dry socket. I think time will get rid of dry socket.

I still have a little swelling. It has now been 7 days from my surgery, is that normal?

It's been 12 days for me since they took the tooth, and i still have slight swelling along with both the rancid taste and smell coming from the site. I've looked but i can't see a dry socket. Is it too early to start doing things such as smoke?

Someone please answer because i'm both confused and worried.

I agree with yergamom. Your mouth will be a little sore a day or two after but it will begin to feel better. Try to take your pain relievers regular to keep the pain down. Yes a dry socket is when there is not healing taking place. But if you continue to pain, I would recommend calling/see your dentist.
