If you have any form of unusual discharge, it is best to see your doctor immediately. You doctor will be able to take some tests to find out the cause of the problem and also treat it with medication to avoid it getting any worse and hopefully treat it quickly and easily. Never leave a problem untreated as it will only get worse and will be harder for your doctor to treat. You should never be shy or embarrassed about seeing your doctor about a personal problem. They will always be professional and will not make you feel uncomfortable. It should be possible to see a female doctor if you would feel more comfortable, but they are all used to and fully trained in personal problems such as this.
Excess or unusual discharge is most likely to be a bacterial infection but the ‘gritty’ description does seem unusual which is why you should contact your doctor. You may also be experiencing burning, soreness or pain during urination and/or intercourse.
To firmly establish the diagnosis and to rule out any other causes of the symptoms, your doctor may take a specimen scraped from the affected area for microscopic analysis or for culture in the laboratory. Identification of yeast under a microscope, when possible, is the least expensive and most rapid and accurate way to establish the diagnosis. The over-the-counter topical treatments are an option for some women when yeast is the cause of the infection. However, it should be noted that infection other than yeast can cause similar symptoms. These include bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. If symptoms are not eliminated by over-the-counter products, patients should see their doctor for evaluation.

I have the same problem... White (almost grey-brown looking) discharge and it does look like tiny pieces of paper wadded up.  I'm sorry for those of you who have this "undiagnosed" problem but I'm sure glad I'm not the only one.  I've had this problem for about 2-3 months now and I've gone to my OBGYN about this issue many times, it's definitely NOT a yeast infection!  I tested negative for yeast infection TWICE!  I did however have a lot of a certain bacteria so my Dr. Diagnosed me with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and prescribed some cream but it didn't work!  So it's not BV or a Yeast Infection... I tested negative for STD's so it's not that either.  I'm at a loss.  About 3-4 weeks ago my Dr. Prescribed this combination fungal/anti-itch cream (Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream) that seemed to improve my symptoms (the itching pretty much went away and my discharge returned to normal) BUT my symptoms returned about a week after I stop using the cream (I finished the cream).  So, I'm guessing it may be some type of fungus... I have another Dr.'s appointment next week, hopefully she can prescribe something else.  Otherwise, I may start looking for another OBGYN!  In the meantime, I'm going to continue my search on the internet and see if anyone has diagnosed this!  I'll post the answer if I find it.  Good Luck!

It's called Bacterial Vaginosis. I've had it for forever. It's just that in woman our Ph Balance tends to be off and in can come back. If you take the meds for some it may work for others you can ask for a treatment plan. I have to take pills twice a day for 7 days.
Then I'm on a 6month treatment plan where I have to use a cream at night 2 times a week before I go to sleep. Some of us are just more prone to getting it than others.

I have been treated with diflucan and monistat and still the same thick, white, but dry (looks like wet paper) keeps coming back...no smell, no pain, no itch, no burn....I need to know how to treat this. The doctor continues to treat me with the same meds over and over

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS CLAIRE723!!! I'm 20 and have been having weird white particle-like discharge. It doesn't really smell and I've been treated for "yeast infections" multiple times but that clearly is not what this is because the yeast medicine did not make it go away! I wish I could get some real answers too...

Sounds like what I am having as well.  It's thick, white and in clumps....kind of spongy.  Sorry if this is too much information, but I did a douche in an attempt to clear things out.  Looked in toilet and it was a at bottom in tiny pieces.  Was washing up and a couple clumps came out - size of nickles.  There was a slight irritation tolerable but irritating.  No odor, or itching.  Tried medicine...didn't work.  Tested twice for everything and negative on all.  It comes and goes.

It's very frustrating but glad to know that it's not just me.

Odorless discharge is yeast infection. You are more prone to have this infection because you are on HRT. Use of hormones for long duration cause yeast/fungus to grow. Use imidazole derivatives and also apply topical anti fungal on your husband to avoid re-occurrence.

I am 26 years old and for the past 4 1/2 years I have had a heavy, white, DRY vaginal discharge that seems to be similar to yeast but more clumpy and thick. YEAST HAS BEEN COMPLETELY RULED OUT. I have seen many doctors and have ruled out ALL possible STDs including yeast and cervical disorders, diabetes and thyroid conditions. Also just had my hormones tested with normal results. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY ANSWERS??

I have the same thing too, but mine has a cheesy odor! It's white, clumpy (like cottage cheese), and dry. It doesn't ooze out on to my panties, it just stays inside my area. It doesn't irritate me, nor does it cause any pain when going to the bathroom. I am sexually active, and I have never had this problem before. My "time of the month" is coming soon, but I've never had this problem before when it was about to arrive. Any clue to what I am experiencing? Can I treat it myself? If I keep cleaning it, will it soon go away, or do I need to go to an OBGYN?
