Unfortunately, there is no set time for braces to stay on. How long one has to wear braces for does vary from person to person, and this usually depends on how many teeth need to be straightened, and the extent of the work required in order to correct the alignment of your teeth. Everyone is completely different but it is usually no less than one whole year. The reason for this is because teeth grow and change very slowly, so in order for the braces to affect your teeth in a positive way, you would need to wear the braces for a long period of time.
The average amount of time one usually wears braces for an average/medium amount of work and straightening is around two and a half years. This may seem like a long time, but two and a half years is a very small slice of time when you consider that your teeth will then be perfectly straight from then on.
Depending on the extent of the work that needs to be carried out by the braces, sometimes, people are required to wear them for around five years and as this is done at a young age, this usually means that a large fraction of school years will be spent wearing braces. Again, although this may sound like an awfully long time, once the time is up, your teeth will be fixed from that day onwards. The estimated amount of time can sometimes be shortened too, by wearing the braces whenever you should and not taking them out when you are not asked to, and by practising fantastic dental hygiene.
Your orthodontist will be able to give you a rough time estimate of when you should expect to have your braces removed.
