If you are a girl or a woman who is noticing a growth spurt in your areolas, chances are this is nothing to be concerned about. For girls, it is just a normal part of breast development. If you are a woman, it is most likely you are pregnant and will notice growth in this area for at least the first eight weeks of your pregnancy.

For many women, this is the very first sign of pregnancy that you can see and feel. Women who are pregnant and notice rapid growth in their areolas may also notice a hardening of the nipples. This is also no cause for alarm and expect this condition to remain the same up until the birth  of your child and beyond. It will make nursing if you are choosing that option, uncomfortable for quite some time but you will get used to it over a period of time.

It is not unusual for women who are pregnant to notice a growth of over three times the previous size. You may also notice a change in color of the areolas, as they most often tend to get darker. This is also nothing to be concerned about as it is normal.

Another change in the body many women will notice at the same time the areolas are getting larger and darker, are twinges and a general feeling of discomfort in the stomach. This is also nothing to be concerned with as long as the pain does not become intense. So if you are experiencing changes in your body and your areolas and getting larger and or harder, this is a strong sign that your are pregnant and if you have not already, you will want to consult with your family physician just to be on the safe side.
