I presume you have been experiencing breast milk leaking from the breast, this is called Galactorrhea. It is perfectly normal to leak small amounts of breast milk after breast-feeding. This can go on for many months or even years.

Leaking breast milk is only considered abnormal when these symptoms are frequent and ongoing or if you are producing large quantities.  If you are experiencing excessive milk production it is best to contact your doctor who will be able to assess the problem and make sure there are no underlying reasons as well as provide treatment. If you have any other symptoms such as swelling or pain in the breast, also mention this to the doctor as this could help them diagnose the problem. Often, leaking can be caused by a trigger, such as menstrual cycle, friction from a bra or clothing, touching the breast to see if there is any milk, birth control pills, miscarriages and pregnancy.  Take note of when the leaking occurs.

More often than not, leaking milk isn't caused by an underlying health problem but it can be a symptom of stress, anxiety, psychosis, chronic renal failure, fibrocystic breast or certain tumors. If it continues or is excessive definitely get it checked out; this will put your mind at ease if nothing else.

Some women, after giving birth, will have this for the rest of their lives. My youngest is 10 and if I squeeze my breast, a milky fluid will come out. I know many women who have this..it's normal. Just to be sure it is nothing to worry about, you could ask your OB-GYN about it.

If you have anything at all sucking or squeezing your breast then your body will continue to produce milk because it thinks it is providing food for your child..

I quit breast feeding two months ago after feeding for two years. I can still sqeeze out milk but sometimes it looks like water and other times it looks kind of brown should I worry? I think I will talk to my doctor about it. I just thought there might be an answer out here! I'll give you an update after talking to my doc.

Did you breastfeed?  If so when did you stop?

Also my sister had a tumor on her pituitary gland and she had breast milk as well. She had to have the tumor shrunk. She is fine now.

However, she didn't get her period either.

Well if you are still breastfeeding occasionally, even as sparse as every 3-4 days you will keep producing milk. Other than that milk production should stop with a stop in demand. Although I have been on forums where there were a couple of stories where mothers who had previously breastfed, stopped, but then had been around a crying baby often and started to produce milk again. You never know...our bodies are amazing things and often do things to puzzle us :)

It is not leaking MILK; It could be leaking Colostrum, but most likely it is because of a
Breast Infection

There are two major types of breast infections, or mastitis, that typically occur.

One form of mastitis is caused by a bacterial infection that typically enters the breast tissue during breastfeeding. This condition is usually treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of this type of breast infection include the following:

A breast lump or thickened skin that develops into an abscess
Older or postmenopausal women may develop periductal mastitis in which milk ducts become inflamed. The exact cause of this condition is unknown; however, the following are symptoms of this type of breast infection:

Inflammation of milk ducts in the dark skin surrounding the nipple (areola)
development of breast lump
breast pain
nipple discharge
nipple retraction
