As someone who's struggled with an eating disorder before, I can tell you that binge eating has some pretty serious effects on the physical and mental well-being of an individual.
Binge eating is basically an overwhelming urge to over eat. It can strike all of a sudden, or it can be chronic.
The effects of binge eating
Most of the physical problems of binge eating are related to obesity (you don't need to be a genius to figure out that excessive eating usually results in excessive weight).
If we take obesity to be the primary effect, then the secondary effects of binge eating are all the possible related symptoms. These include:
Besides these issues, there is the possibility of a problem with the patient's gall bladder.
The psychological effects of binge eating
Binge eating is very much psychological condition, and its main causes are often:
One of the primary psychological complications associated with binge eating is a basic lowering of self-esteem.
This in turn causes sufferers to become reclusive and avoid normal activities (such as socializing and going out).
In my experience, it drove me more and more into myself. I managed to build up the courage to speak to a healthcare provider about my problem, and I was lucky! I received the help and support to get me back on the right track health-wise.
Unless it is recognized and treated on time, binge eating can leave severe psychological scarring!
