Cramping can be in any woman either she is trying for pregnancy or not. There are some ladies who don't get cramping. In non pregnant ladies, cramps during or before periods are due to contractions of uterus due to increased levels of prostaglandin. These contractions are needed to destroy endometrial linings. Sometimes, high levels of prostaglandin can cause cramps. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs can be used to treat these cramps.

Cramps during pregnancy can also be normal. These cramps are related with the increase in uterine size in order to accommodate growing baby. Sometimes, these cramps are sever like labor pain but their intensity and duration is less. These cramps during pregnancy need no treatment until accompanied by vaginal bleeding.
