Best time to take it is first thing in the morning when your urine is more concentrated(less diluted). You can take one as early as 3-4 weeks of pregnancy but might not give an accurate reading if you are pregnant & have low HCG levels. In that case, a blood test at the doctor's is best.

Well when you miss out on your regular periods it is one of the main signs of pregnancy and I suppose that this would be the best time to take a pregnancy test. A pregnancy test normally detects pregnancy eight to twelve days after ovulation. The initial test invented for pregnancy was the rosette inhibition assay for early pregnancy factor. The early pregnancy factor can be identified in blood in less than 48 hours of fertilization. On the other hand early pregnancy test is not favoured because it is extremely time consuming and costly.

All commercially existing tests for pregnancy mainly try to detect the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in the blood or urine. Most of the pregnancy tests are carried out after missing the menstruation or usually 2 to 3 weeks after ovulation.
