An ectopic pregnancy cannot really be picked up by a home pregnancy test. Your pregnancy test may be positive. Yet it is important to note that this is not always true. Sometimes, specialised hCG blood tests are necessary in order to confirm this. It has to be suspected if a woman shows the following symptoms as well: one-sided pain in the woman's stomach; Lower back, pelvic or abdominal pain; shoulder pain; collapse; bladder or bowel problems; abnormal bleeding; and a missed or late period. It needs to be diagnosed by your doctor at the earliest.
It is likely that your doctor will first perform a physical exam. Typically a sonogram, laparoscopy or laparotomy, urine and blood tests may be needed.
