Yes. It can cause your period to be heavier than normal and to last longer.
  I have IDA and I also get really bad cramping, bad spotting before and after I start my period, and blood clots (sometimes I have none, but sometimes I have more than the average person and they are huge and can actually be quite painful!). TMI?
  I'm sure there are other side effects but I am having trouble finding any websites with good information.
  The Tyra Show (Tyra Banks the supermodel's talk show) actually JUST did a show on periods and iron def anemia and it's effects came up. Try looking at the website for the show and maybe you can watch part of the segment or even find some other links and information.
