Dosage plays a big part but I think they can be taken together (drug checker website might give some warning, but it more geared toward long term use). Had a regent surgery and they constantly gave me a lovely blend of dilaudid, precocity, xanax, and ambien. Xanax was 3 times a day with the pain relive given every for hours.
Once I got out I took a conservative approach and let 3-4 hours pass and never had an issue. After 4 hours either meds are about done anyway and it will take about 30mins for the new med to get into your system and start feeling the effects.
