It sounds as if you may be describing as abscess. It's an infection that forms around the root of a tooth and causes swelling and pain. It needs to be treated or it could lead to bigger problems of which losing the tooth is the least is the least of them. If the infection spreads it could compromise the immune system and even become life-threatening. You'd better see a dentist.ASAP.
