If having sexual intercourse without contraception, a woman can become pregnant at anytime within their menstrual cycle (period).

Despite what many may think, a person can also become pregnant even if they have never had a period before or this is the first time they have had sex.

  • Sex and the Menstrual Cycle
Unfortunately there is no safe time during a menstrual cycle when a female can have sex without contraception, and not risk the possibility of pregnancy.

However there are times during a menstrual cycle when women are both more fertile and also less likely to conceive.

A menstrual cycle begins on the first day of a woman's period, continuing up to the first day of the next subsequent period. They are most fertile around ovulation which occurs in the middle third of their cycle. This is usually around 10-16 days before the next period begins, and is the time when a woman's eggs are released from the ovaries.

As an example, if the average woman has a 28 day menstrual cycle, then they will usually begin to ovulate around the 14th day.

  • Safe Sex
Unless you are actively trying to get pregnant, it is always recommended that you use safe and reliable contraception when having sexual intercourse. As this not only reduces the chances of unwanted pregnancy, but also prevents the passing of sexually transmitted infections.

If you have any further inquiries, worries or questions, it is suggested you seek the advice of a doctor or qualified health professional immediately.
