At 5 weeks pregnant, it is unlikely you would be able to feel your baby moving around in your stomach. The foetus would not yet have fully formed bones or muscles so would not be able to move or kick you at this stage. The baby will only be around 5 millimetres in length too so it would be almost impossible to feel anything at this stage.
What you are probably describing is trapped wind and gases in your stomach area. As your body is changing with all the new hormones and baby growing inside you, it is quite common for excess gases to be produced. When released in the stomach area, this can often be mistaken for a baby moving as it is often described as being a similar feeling. In addition, it could also be an indication you have eaten too much and just have some indigestion.
At this stage and as your pregnancy progresses you may feel the muscles in your uterus and stomach move and contract. This is because the body needs to change to support the baby growing inside. These symptoms could therefore also be the muscles twitching as they prepare to move and contract to accommodate your baby.
If this is your first baby and you are worried, there is nothing wrong with sharing your concerns or fears with your doctor or midwife. They will be able to reassure you and explain exactly what it is you are feeling.
