Yes it is normal, but this must still be mentioned to your doctor. You should discuss any type of discharge or spotting that you are experiencing with your physician, but a brown mucus discharge during early pregnancy could have numerous causes:
  • Implantation
Right at the beginning of pregnancy a woman might experience a brown, red or even pink discharge or spotting when her fertilized egg starts embedding itself into the wall of her uterus. Implantation bleeding usually occurs up to two weeks after conception has occurred. The mucus discharge might be blood streaked during implantation. Some women will not realize they are actually pregnant and will think that this is an irregular period.
  • The uterus growing and stretching
Other brown mucus discharge during early pregnancy could be from the uterus and surrounding tissue growing and stretching. Light bleeding could occur while the uterus is changing its shape and size for the growing embryo. This bleeding will occur slowly and will not be blood flow that is active, so that by the time this blood exits a woman's body the blood will usually be light brown.
  • Hormonal changes
Mucus discharge is triggered by the changes in a woman's hormones during pregnancy, and is due to an increase in the levels of estrogen.
A thick white mucus discharge will generally be experienced throughout pregnancy. The quantity and texture of mucus discharge during pregnancy will change at the different stages of a woman's pregnancy. An increase in estrogen will also cause an increase in blood flow to a woman's pelvic region. This will further increase the amount of mucus discharge all through pregnancy. A discharge that is milky white in early pregnancy will normally be odorless. Sometimes it will have a slight odor that will not be repulsive.

Yes it is very common. You should not worry unless you are having cramps and if it turns into bright red bleeding, then I would call your doctor. Many women have brown spotting during early pregnancy and have healthy babies.

Brown Discharge In Early Pregnancy may be normal although any form of bleeding regardless of the colour during the early pregnancy should be checked out. Brown Discharge can be a result of having sexual intercourse during early pregnancy. If you never had D&C, you will need to have a scan. How there may other indicators of brown discharge other than those mentioned above. A doctor would happy to discuss some of these with you.

Brown discharge in early pregnancy can be a sign of implatation. I spotted 1-2 days very light (pink and brown colors). I felt cramps during that time as well but went away in 2 days. This happened a week after we had unprotected sex.
