It depends very much on your own body on when your periods will restart after having Depo Provera. Depo Provera is a progestogen-only contraceptive injection that is injected every 12 weeks directly into muscular tissue such as on the upper arm or buttocks. It works by continuously producing and releasing a hormone called medroxyprogesterone which prevents eggs from being released into the ovaries, increases the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb, which makes it more difficult for sperm to pass from the vagina into the womb and fertilise any eggs. Because of the way it works, it takes time for a woman's fertility to return to normal. Most women begin to ovulate after five to six months of stopping Depo Provera, but for some it can be as long as 10 to 15 months and sometimes even longer. The effects of the injection cannot be reversed and is effective immediately if taken correctly within the first five days of your period. There are some very common side effects that affect one in 10 people, such as abdominal pain or discomfort, and headaches. Less common side effects, effecting one in every 100 people include menstrual changes, changes in appetite, breast tenderness or pain, nausea, bloating and backache. It is likely that your periods will stop whilst on Depo Provera, so obviously will take time to return to normal as it leaves your body, and every woman is different, with different reactions. If in doubt, see your doctor or speak to a family planning clinic, who will be able to offer confidential and practical advice.

Cycle irregularities are common during and after discontinuation of the
depot shots. These problems are more with medroxyprogesterone. As you
have use depot shot once only then your problem will not last long.
Within 3-5 months your cycle will be normal. Prolong use of these
shots can cause more problems.

I have been on depo for 2 years and just got off it in November of 2009. Got a weird brown spotting for 7 days at end of December and then in beginning of January got full blown period. So it pretty much was right away that I got my period back. My husband and I want to start a family and I heard it takes about a year to get pregnant. Does getting my period right away increase my chances of getting pregnant sooner than one year?

I was using it for at least two years when it first came out. After coming off it, it took me a few months to get my first cycle. It is usually normal for that as I was told because our body has to get back to start producing again. When it finally starts back be ready.

Return of periods and fertility after stopping use of birth control shots depends upon duration of use and individual response of the user. Usually this can take at least 6 months to start periods. Further delay up to 18 months is also possible. So, you should wait for few months for complete excretion of of depot shots from your body.

I've been off of depo since Jan-February ish and haven't gotten my period yet, so I guess it just depends on your body. I am considering getting on the pill just for a month so I can get my period.
